Diet Devotional 33

And the sugar said, "...apart from me you can do nothing."

It seems that the devil uses half-truths to get my attention. It's true that I am weak and need help getting through this life. It's not true that sugar (insert your own variation of temptation) will help me do it. In Jeremiah Chapter 2, the prophet Jeremiah exposes Israel's unfaithfulness. They had rejected God and turned to false gods made of wood and stone. This entire chapter reminds me of myself, how I try to use something powerless, something my own hands have made, to save me in my distress.

Jeremiah 2:27-28 "They have turned their backs to me [God] and not their faces; yet when they are in trouble, they say, "Come and save us!" Where then are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble!"

I am like the Israelites who looked for God in their despair and worshipped idols in their prosperity. What if I was diagnosed with cancer? Would I go eat a big dinner believing that I would get well? If I was about to crash in a car wreck, would I pop a piece of candy in my mouth hoping that it would save me from death? No! Truth is, I know deep down that food is no more a savior than anything else made from this earth (pick any of my past addictions!). God has the power and the ability to walk me through every possible trial, big or small.
